The Terran Alliance Marines are trained to assault heavily defended positions from orbit. They are outfitted with heavy powered armor and large supporting combat mecha. The mecha engage armored ground or air targets while the Assault Armored Marines seize ground objectives or breach fortifications.
A standard squad is three beings. A squad leader, a Regular Assault marine and a Flamer / Mortar equipped specialist.
A Platoon consists of three squads supported by two Hermes class Medium Mecha.
The platoon commander is a tough nut to crack. He has lots of health, a Decent Plasma gun, grenades and a power claw for opening blast doors and armored vehicles. He has good morale and is a veteran of many missions. Marines don't let wet behind the ears Lieutenants command Assault Armor Platoons so a typical platoon is commanded by a Major with a Captain as executive officer. Most of the rest of the Marines are mid to high ranking NCOs with many years of experience in the Marine Corps.
Marines are specially selected for the Assault Armor training course but only 25% typically pass and go on to pilot the heavy assault armor. They are physically fit, mentally disciplined and experienced combat vets.
One specialist is assigned to each squad and has been trained to use the compact armor mortar and plasma flame thrower. They use their indirect fire capabilities to support the rest of the platoon and their flame thrower to clear out bunkers, light vehicles, non-powered armor troops and buildings. They are usually senior NCOs with at least 10 missions in a Assault Armor unit.
Here is a size comparison between a Terran Assault Armor Marine, a Myrmidon super soldier and a fire team of Marines in open clam-shell armor.
I was inspired by Battletech Elementals and Starship Troopers Powered Armor Mobile Infantry. They are some of my most favorite modelling projects to date. And I really enjoy playing them on the battlefield. They are rock hard and hard hitting troops with good mobility and jump packs. They are a mixed unit of Humans, Fel'akin and Aven troops and work closely with other mixed Marine units for various operations.
